Spontaneous Engine Fires: Kia and Hyundai
Kia and Hyundai are two of the fastest growing car manufacturers in the United States today, but there has been growing concern over allegations that a design flaw in the cars create spontaneous engine fires not related to vehicle crashes. With thousands of consumer complaints, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating three million vehicles.
Non-Crash Related Engine Fires in Kia and Hyundai Models
The NHTSA has received over 3,000 reports of these non-crash related engine fires. Consumers allege that a design flaw in the engines of these vehicles causes the engine parts to seize, making the engine stop working while running. Complications from engine seizure can cause engine parts to break and cause leaks that may ignite a fire.
Driving Hazards from Design Flaws
In addition to fire, consumer complaints to the NHTSA included smoke, vehicle stalling, power loss, engine knocking noise, and illumination of check engine and other warning indicators.
Affected vehicles currently include:
2011-2019 Kia Optima
2011-2019 Kia Sportage
2012–2019 Kia Sorrento
2012-2019 Kia Soul
2011-2019 Hyundai Sonata
2013-2019 Hyundai Santa Fe
2013-2019 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport
